The Fountain and Security-Widefield areas are located on the southeastern rim of Colorado Springs, about 10 miles south. Founded in 1859 with roots steeped in railroad shipping and ranching, Fountain was named after Fountain Creek, which flows through the city. It was officially incorporated in 1903 and today is home to more than 25,800 residents.
The city is what the state of Colorado defines as a Home Rule Municipality, meaning it is self-governing, with its own water and electric utilities and the power to determine its form of government. Fountain’s mayor and six-member city council work together with commissions and advisory boards to govern the city, while its city manager administers all its various departments.
The Security-Widefield neighborhood is particularly convenient and a desirable location for area residents who need or want to be close to Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base and the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport.
Even if you have never been to Colorado Springs, chances are excellent that you have at least heard of some of its most prominent residents and attractions, such as the United States Olympic Training Center, the United States Olympic Committee, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, and the United States Air Force Academy. Colorado Springs is also home to several other installations and defense contractors. Fort Carson (Army), Peterson Air Force Base, Shriever Air Force Base, and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) center, a Cold War relic housed inside Cheyenne Mountain, are all located in Colorado Springs. Thanks in no small part to the incredible popularity of Colorado Springs as a tourist destination, Fountain and the Security-Widefield neighborhood is rife with one-of-a-kind locally owned and operated shops, boutiques, and specialty retailers in their quaint, charming home town. The region hosts numerous seasonal events such as the First Friday ArtWalk, Farmer’s Market, and Territory Days in Old Colorado City and the MeadowGrass Music Festival, Wine Festival, and Great Fruit Cake Toss in nearby Manitou Springs.
The Hancock Plaza Shopping offer a wide variety of national retail and restaurant chains to the residents of Security-Widefield and Fountain; however, you can easily spice up your shopping and dining entrees by adding some local establishments such as Korean Garden. Fountain residents are only about 10 miles from Colorado Springs and their amenities.

Living
Life is pretty sweet for the 431,834 residents of the southern Colorado known colloquially as “The Springs.” The city’s natural beauty is second to none, resting as it does in the cool shade provided by the Rocky Mountains, the foothills of which lie just beyond the city’s western edge. Denver is just a short 65-mile run up I-25, and a good number of Coloradoʼs must-see natural wonders – Seven Falls, Cave of the Winds, and Pikes Peak – are within easy reach of Fountain and the Security-Widefield neighborhood.
The City of Fountain’s website describes the city as one of El Paso County’s fastest growing communities, boasting a more than 66 percent population growth since 2000.
Fountain was selected as ‘America’s Millennium City’ in 1999 by the New York Times, and an ‘All-America City’ in 2002 by the National Civic League. The city is also the home of Pikes Peak International Raceway.
Schools, Health, and Transporation
Security-Widefield residents seeking public education for their children will find eight elementary schools, three junior high schools, and three high schools provided by Widefield School District 3.
Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 has a total enrollment of about 7,840, and is made up of eight elementary schools (Aragon, Eagleside, Mesa, Jordahl, Mountainside, Patriot, Abrams and Weikel), two middle schools (Fountain and Carson), one high school (Fountain-Fort Carson) and one alternative secondary school (Lorraine).
Security-Widefield residents enjoy easy access to medical care facilities, health care centers and hospitals near Fountain. These include the following: Memorial Hospital Central (Colorado Springs); Centura Health-Penrose St. Francis Health Services (Colorado Springs); and Parkview Medical Center(Pueblo).
Transportation options in the area include Interstate 25, US Highway 24 & 85, several state and local thoroughfares, the Mountain Metro bus system, Greyhound Bus Lines and Fountain Municipal Transit. Air travel can be accessed through the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, and Denver International Airport.
