Visitors may note the elevation and hills in the zoo combine for a delightful workout. The Mountaineer Sky Ride gives sightseers the chance to take in the scene from above while riding in a chairlift. Included in your admission to the zoo is a trip to theĀ Will Rogers Shrine, a 1.4-mile drive up the mountainside delivering glorious views of the city and the mountains around it.
Not far from the zoo isĀ Seven Falls, an enclosed canyon formed by the Pikes Peak watershed. The Pillars of Hercules are rock formations that rise dramatically 900 feet above the canyon ļ¬oor and house the only waterfall in Colorado to earn the distinction of landing on National Geographicās list of International waterfalls. Water drops 181 feet over the pink granite in seven leaps. Intrepid visitors may choose to climb the 224 steps along the side of the falls to hiking trails and the stream that forms the waterfall. Reaching the top of the stairs offers both spectacular views and a solid sense of accomplishment.
History buffs enjoy exploring the history of mining and visiting Nugget the burro at theĀ Western Museum of Mining and IndustryĀ located right along North Gate Boulevard. The historic former El Paso County Courthouse in downtownĀ Colorado SpringsĀ houses theĀ Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, dedicated to sharing the history and culture of the Pikes Peak region through exhibits of Western art, antique quilts, Indian culture, and space exploration.
